"Mom, what is Karma?" Lily asked tonight when I tucked her into bed.
Karma or more accurately, putting good will out into the world is a big thing in our house. Karma is not something we focus on, rather we focus on being good people and putting good out into the world with open hearts.
I suppose as an end result we hope that good will come back to us if we do good, cause and effect, which I guess is the very definition of Karma.
So tonight when Lily asked what is Karma, we proceeded to have a ten minute discussion between the four of us, to try to explain Karma.
I said, "Karma is when you put good things out into the universe and you are a good person, you will then have good Karma. When you put good things out there, you will get good things back."
Belle explained, "when you do good things it will come back to you in life."
And Drew did as Drew does, and gave some arcane definition that he got from the source of all sources, his iPhone, "Karma is sometimes referred to as a "moral law of cause and effect." Karma is both an encouragement to do good and to avoid evil, as well as an explanation for whatever good or evil befalls a person."
Lily seemed to be growing increasingly uncomfortable with all this talk about being a good person or else......and she just kept asking, "but will something bad happen to me?"
So after our conversation ended, I continued tucking her into bed and she kept saying she was scared she was going to get The Karma.
We explained it's not like the flu, or a sickness or a disease, it's not something you catch and not to worry. Finally, we settled it and she went to sleep. Explaining something you can't see, feel or touch to a seven year old can be quite the challenge.
This morning when Lily woke up, her back was hurting in a way it has never hurt before.
"Mama my back is killing me" she said.
"Okay baby", I answered, "I think you may have slept funny, that's all."
"Oh no," she replied, her eyes opened wide, "I hope I didn't get the karma."
Sadie,
That is hysterical!! "THE Karma"! Ha!!
Hugs to you and those precious girls,
gabriele

Maybe she had done something bad, so she was expecting the karma.
