Butterflies

Belle and I had the sweetest conversation last night. We lay in my bed, on our sides, propped up on our elbows with our faces practically touching.  Belle has the cutest freckles on her nose and I could have stayed in that position for hours listening to her stories about school.

This story started with, "Mom, can I tell you something private and personal that you have to swear not to tell anyone, not even Daddy?"

Inside I was thinking, are you freaking kidding me? Personal AND private, hell yeah you can tell me, but I chose to play it calm, cool and collected.

"Sure baby, anything."  I answered. 

"Well", she said smiling in that shy way that girls do when they are about to talk about a boy or a silly embarassing body part, "so I think I have a crush on a boy."

"Really?" I asked.  "Who is it?"

And then the cutest thing happened....

She said "Mom, I can't explain it but he makes me feel so, like well I can't explain it exactly, but the way I feel when he is around is so different from anything I have ever felt before."

I just about died.  The way she said it was so sweet and innocent and so totally from her heart. And then she went on to share with me the excitement that she feels when she is around this boy.

She told me about how when he goes down the hill to play at recess, she always finds a way to suggest to her friends that they should go play in that spot too.  And when he goes up the hill, she follows him discreetly up there too.  Which of course as I am soaking up all this amazing one on one first crush talking sharing thing, all I can think about is...oh no, NOW I am going to have to teach her to play games, play hard to get and all that other messed up crap that we learn to do to mask our true feelings so she doesn't get her heart broken or taken advantage of at some point in the not to distant future. 

Or maybe I won't bore her with all those details, and I will let her lead with her heart.  One thing I do know for sure is that this little boy, whomever he is, is one lucky little boy.
