I told you I would come back and report about whether my experience yesterday afternoon was life changing or not and I am still undecided about the life changing part, but I will tell you where I was unless you have already figured it out...and based on the title to this post I wouldn't be surprised if you have ....I had a colonic.
The woman who did it, Rachel, was this beautiful, blonde straight-forward Australian women and was just too cool and I think that made all the difference. But I will back up a bit and tell you why this even happened.
Drew and I are extremely healthy as well as very aware of what we put into our bodies on a daily basis in terms of sodium, cholesterol, partially hydrogenated shit and other ingredients that we can't even pronounce.
Because we are vegetarians, we also pay alot of attention to the protein content of foods including the girls, who can tell you the protein content of just about everything they eat. I definitely don't get enough protein for my body weight and rely more on starches for about fifty percent of my diet and that is something I would really like to change in the coming year.
My girls have always been healthy eaters. They eat fruits and vegetable's for lunch and dinner every day. They even eat tofu straight out of the container (it has to be the firm kind though or no dice). They do also eat their fair share of pasta, pizza, bagels and sugar because we are health conscious not militant, but they have a perfectly balanced diet and one that I am extremely proud of because it was not always the easiest choice to prepare fresh veggies as opposed to say a processed can of Chef Boyardee or Pop Tarts.
ANYWAY, my friend and I have been discussing for over two years now how she gets colonics and how wonderful it is for your body. I have known for a long time how important colon health is and how many cancers are related to your colon and if you are not eliminating properly and daily, you are screwed in the long term.
I have heard of people who eliminate (and I am going to keep it totally above board and technical here so as not to turn off any of my readers, although most of my readers including the men have children so they basically have seen it all and experienced it all anyway, from babies' exploding poos to cleaning up other sorts of bathroom accidents) and that bit in the parenthesis was so long you may have forgotten where I was going with that sentence so I will start again.
I have heard and read about people who do not eliminate everyday but rather every few days and Rachel substantiated that fact by telling me she has had patients that only pooed every week or so. Eliminating is the KEY to good health and it is absolutely vital.
I take ALOT of fiber everyday to keep myself regular but without it I would be one of those people. So my friend who does this usually every three or four months or when she has run off course and found herself eating really shit foods, has been urging me to go see Rachel for quite some time.
I have been procrastinating and hiding behind (hiding because it is not the most pleasant sounding thing one would want to do with a free hour of their life) my busy schedule with working, kids, school and just life, and have just not found the time to do it.
I like many other busy Moms don't usually take the time out of my schedule to go and do something for myself. So based on my non-compliance with setting this appointment up on my own, my friend took matters into her own hands and bought me a colonic for Christmas. Weird, but true and something good friends can do for one another. And if she hadn't gone ahead and done it, I probably would never have gotten around to it either.
So I am grateful that she did, but will say having a colonic is not for the faint of heart. It wasn't as painful as I had imagined, but it wasn't something that you want to be doing every day either. I will say although it wasn't life changing, it has made me extremely hesitant to put starches and cheese (which Rachel called the devil) back into my body now that it has been sufficiently cleaned out.
Rachel told me that my system was a little sluggish, so I think having quarterly or semi-annually colonics are in my future since I want to be as healthy as possible. I am also going to change my diet to consist more of fruits and veggies and less pizza, in fact I am off to buy a juicer today.
In preparation for the colonic, I have been drinking fresh yogurt-based smoothies and eating two hard boiled eggs (sans the yolk) in the morning at work as opposed to my normal english muffin.
I do feel lighter and healthier and it feels amazing. I have also lost a few lbs in the last week since switching to my smoothies and I think the greatest takeaway from this experience despite being super health conscious already, it has given me an even greater since of making sure that I am putting only wholesome things into my body.
So I think that post went well considering the subject...I didn't gross you out too much did I?
